Green builder goes for the gold

Jacob White Construction Co, a Houston-based firm, headed by Jeff Mickler, is building the area’s first green, or environmentally correct, medical offices at 251 Medical Center Blvd. in Galveston.
The 48,000-square-foot center will include a grass roof with 8 inches of soil and plant life that works to trap storm-water runoff, keep the building cooler and generate oxygen for the atmosphere. A 172,000-gallon underground tank will capture water for landscape irrigation and use in toilets, Mickler said.
The developer is building the three-story center under U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design guidelines. For such certification, the building must have a healthy indoor environment, maximum energy efficiency and be developed with the thoughtful use of natural resources. The highest rating under the council’s certification is gold, for which Mickler is striving.
